March 2014 #bookadaychallenge - UNDERRATED

Today is the fourth day of BOOKSARELOVEX3's Bookadaychallenge and today's theme is: UNDERRATED

Let's go!

First up we have Eva Morgans modern day +Sherlock Holmes retelling 'LOCKED'

It is a young-adult mystery and is based on the Sherlock Holmes series by A. Doyle, but with a young-adult spin to it! A teenage Sherlock? Yes please.

BLURB//
When eighteen-year-old Irene Adler meets her new neighbor, the gorgeous, brilliant, and arrogant Sherlock Holmes, she never expects him to be the one to make her feel like life is worth living again. Ever since her sister's death, she's been addicted to risk-taking as a way to deal with her depression, and Sherlock quickly becomes the biggest risk she's ever taken.

Locked is the story of a broken girl and the genius who gives her life back to her. It's the story of a witty asshole who's never known love, and the girl who shows him what love means. It's the story of an unexpected connection, two people who save each other, and the importance of seeing the goodness underneath.

*Based on the Sherlock Holmes series by Arthur Conan Doyle

There are so many great things to be said about this book, but it is not a story that deserves to be spoiled.
So all I'm going to say to you is: BRACE YOURSELF and prepare to lose a fair amount of sleep because you'll burn right through the pages. I know I did.

2.

A Monster Calls by super talent Patrick Ness.

Now I know Patrick has won a bunch of awards for this book, but unfortunately, the hype died down pretty quickly.
I just think a book like this deserves a lot more attention. And I mean a lot, a lot.

The illustrations alone are absolutely breathtaking.
A Monster Calls left me in a particularly crushing emotional  state and I loved its originality and the creative side of it.

A thrilling piece for young and old.

The monster showed up after midnight. As they do.

But it isn't the monster Conor's been expecting. He's been expecting the one from his nightmare, the one he's had nearly every night since his mother started her treatments, the one with the darkness and the wind and the screaming...

This monster is something different, though. Something ancient, something wild. And it wants the most dangerous thing of all from Conor.

It wants the truth.

Number 3 on our list is Lovely Vicious by romance author Sara Wolf

The cover was what intrigued me initially. The story however blew me away. Utterly and completely threw me.
Definitely didn't see that one coming when I started it. Now let me make this clear for you, this is by no means your average teen romance.  Nope.  So if you're expecting sappy, sugary sweet romance, then this isn't the book for you. However, if you're keen on mystery, suspense and intrigue topped off with the most brilliant kinds of humour, what are you waiting for!? Lovely Vicious will knock your socks off.

There a so many different layers of darkness and solid ice that surround both of the main characters and I absolutely loved. Devoured it. I couldn't put it down and went through a serious phase of book mourning after I turned the last page.

And last but not certainly not least we have Tethers by young-adult and historical fiction author Jack Croxall.

Tethers was Jack's debut novel and came out in last February. Tethers is an action packed novel with a bit of everything. Adventure, fantasy a bit of mystery- You name it.

The story is wonderfully executed and deserves ALL the prizes. If you haven't read it, you're missing out.

BIG TIME.

In the wake of a cold Victorian winter, Karl Scheffer and Esther Emerson discover an anonymous journal filled with strange passages and bizarre scribblings.

The journal soon draws them into a covert and sinister conspiracy, a conspiracy centred around an otherworldly artefact with the power to change everything …

Karl and Esther have spent almost every day of their thirteen years in the quiet market town of Shraye. Stifled by their rural surroundings and frustrated by their unfulfilled ambitions, they find the allure of the journal’s mysterious pages impossible to ignore. The book seems to be beckoning them away from Shraye, away from their homes and towards the coast where an unsolved disappearance has set in motion a dark chain of events.

The voyage the teenagers soon find themselves undertaking is one of desperate importance and true peril; it will change the way they see the world, and each other, forever

Book talk - Review of This Charming Man By C.K. McDonnell

V ampires do not exist. Everyone knows this. So it's particularly annoying when they start popping up around Manchester . Nobody is pleased about it. Not the Founders, the secret organisation for whom vampires were invented as an allegory, nor the Folk, the magical people hidden in plain sight who only want a quiet life. And definitely not the people of Manchester, because there is nothing more irksome than being murdered by an allegory run amok. Somebody needs to sort this out fast before all Hell really breaks loose - step forward the staff of The Stranger Times. It's not like they don't have enough to be dealing with. Assistant Editor Hannah has come back from getting messily divorced to discover that someone is trying to kidnap a member of their staff and while editor Vincent Banecroft would be delighted to see the back of any of his team, he doesn't like people touching his stuff - it's the principle of the thing. Throw in a precarious plumbing situation, gam...
